- Art History Resources on the Web : This comprehensive Art History resource organizes links by civilization and then by subheadings, such as Prehistoric Art with Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic Art subheadings. - Education by Design: The Bienes Center's WPA Museum Extension Project Collection : An online exhibit and digital database of over 700 educational and visual aids from a collection at the Broward County (FL) Main Library produced under the Works Administration Program (WPA) between 1935 and 1943. The site also includes a brief history of the WPA and a select bibliography.
- Hermitage Museum : The official website of the Hermitage Museum has online exhibits and a lot of information. Available in English or Russian.
- Latin American Art Directory: South American, Central American, Mexican and Caribbean Art Gallery : The Latin American Art Directory is an online journal for Latin arts and culture. This site allows you to read biographies and interview transcripts with famous Latin American artists; read current articles on issues in the Latin America artists’ community; view and review Latin art collections from major museums; and browse a directory of museums and other institutions housing Latin art collections. Available in both English and Spanish.
- Making Sense of Marcel Duchamp : This is a multimedia timeline of the works of the sculptor, painter and author, Marcel Duchamp. Through animation, you can interact with Duchamp's artworks. Look for the bibliography at the end of the timeline.
- National Museum of Women in the Arts : "The only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to recognizing the contributions of women artists. In the pages that follow you will discover a wealth of information about the museum, selected artists, our collection, and many services. You may choose to examine images of works from our permanent collection. Artist profiles feature the lives of selected women artists and corresponding bibliographies lead you to new sources of information."
- Pictures Catalogue: The National Library of Australia's Pictorial Collection : "This catalogue contains descriptions of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and three-dimensional objects held in the Pictorial Collection of the National Library of Australia. The emphasis is on Australian material, with some material relating to New Zealand, Antarctica, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific. The main time period covered is late eighteenth century to the present day. The Collection includes thousands of portraits of significant Australians. The Pictorial Collection contains approximately 45,000 paintings and 550,000 photographs; most of this material has been catalogued with individual descriptions or collection summaries. All these descriptions and summaries can be searched on this database. Of the material that has been catalogued, over 30,000 items have been digitised. - Taoism and the Arts of China : This site provides essays on the Taoist tradition, illustrated by works from the Art Insitute of Chicago's Taoism and the Arts of China exhibit. Glossary links within the text assist the reader in understanding the important terms and concepts associated with Taoism. The site also includes lesson plans and an extensive list of references.
- the-artists.org : the-artists.org features an "extended database of 20th Century and contemporary visual artists. The masters of the past hundred years are represented with their portrait, dates and places of birth and death, with links to webresources to find anything you want to know about them, with images of their work, comprehensive biographies and articles, and if it exists, the artist's personal website."
- Universes in Universe : International arts focus with a tab to biennial listings around the globe.

- Mind and Matter: A Guide to Drawing Materials and Techniques : "A comprehensive reference on the materials, techniques, and process of drawing." Includes information on supports, dry and liquid media, and the functions of drawing throughout history.
- Figure-Drawing Lab : An online tutorial for artists and students showing the techniques of portraying the human figure. Useful graphics and bibliography.
PAINTING
§ About.com: Painting : An Internet guide for artistic painting, with feature articles, Website links, and discussion forums. Topics covered include instruction and techniques, color theory, famous painters and galleries, painting supplies, painting for youth, and career as an artist.
§ Art of the First World War : This site commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Armistice through "an exhibition of 110 paintings brought together by the major history museums of Europe. World War I as seen by 54 painters on both sides." The paintings are arranged by painter or grouped chronologically by stages of the war. Text discussing the war and each painter is interspersed throughout the exhibit. Versions of the site are available in English, French, and German.
§ The Life and Work of Artist Anton S. Tobey : This is a very comprehensive site on the life and works of the late artist Anton S. Tobey. "The site contains over 300 of Tobey’s murals, portraits of famous people, his published paintings in Life and The Golden Books series and an illustrated biography of him with over 50 illustrations of him with family, at work and teaching art."
§ Mexico Ilustrado: Los murales mexicanos : Here you will find background information and images from Mexico’s best-known artists: the muralistas. Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siquieros are profiled with a number of their most famous works; also features historical background about the political and social context in which this movement and its artists arose. In Spanish.
§ Russian Painting : Russian artistry from medieval Russia to the present.
§ The Shakespeare Art Museum : Featuring the writings and visual works (oil paintings, graphics, and watercolors) of visual artist Hannah Tompkins, these works based on the plays and themes of William Shakespeare were displayed at the Shakespeare Art Museum in Ashland Oregon. The Museum was founded in 1984 as a non-profit organization by Wolf Tomkins and Hannah Tompkins. "At the museum, Hannah often gave gallery talks and tours sharing her wit and wisdom of the Shakespearean experience." The museum closed in 1990 and Hannah died of cancer five years later. This online art museum displays Tompkin's oil paintings, multi-color graphics, and watercolors with her text and descriptions, all dealing with the works and themes of Shakespeare.
§ The Vincent van Gogh Information Gallery : "The site currently contains information about all of Van Gogh's paintings." It has "grown to more than 2,330 pages and 2,345 graphics." Besides viewing the paintings online, you can download databases listing the paintings, Van Gogh stamps, or Van Gogh's Correspondence for free. There's also a biography and chronology of Van Gogh's life.
§ Voices from the Gaps : This site promotes women writers and artists of color. It was designed and is maintained by the University of Minnesota and contains biographies and literary analysis of the artists' work. The site also has blogs from the artists and recorded interviews. Though much of the analysis is done by students at the university, it is a good place to start research about these artists and writers.
§ Web Gallery of Art : "The Web Gallery of Art is a virtual museum and searchable database of European painting and sculpture of the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods (1150-1750), currently containing over 8,000 reproductions. Biographies, commentaries, guided tours are available."

- About.com: Photography : An Internet guide to photography & photographers, with feature articles, Website links, and discussion forums. Topics covered include cameras & other equipment, taking & developing pictures, film vs. digital photography, rights & copyright, and history of photography.
- African Imagery : This website brings together photographers who focus on Africa. Artists are solicited to contribute; their photographs are available for viewing in the Galleries.
- Albumen: History, Science and Preservation : "Presenting the art and science of albumen printing, this site brings together 19th Century technical instruction, contemporary research, an online forum for conservation treatment and a wealth of images. This unique resource is dedicated to those who value the application of technology to the creative process of image making."
- The Alternative Photographic Process FAQ : "The purpose of this FAQ is to introduce the novice to the field of alternative photographic processes. Alternative photographic processes are usually considered to be any photographic process that does not use the methods and technology of current silver-gelatin materials. This FAQ is not meant to be used as a guide to alternative process work, but as an introduction and reference for finding further information." Provides brief information about each process, as well as a bibliography of references, a listing of journals and magazines, and a directory of companies that sell the materials needed for the processes.
- American Museum of Photography : You can take a guided tour of the museum or view online photographic exhibits. "Exhibitions at The American Museum of Photography are drawn from the Collection of Wm. B. Becker. This privately-held collection is concentrated on the first 75 years of photography--from shortly after the medium's invention in 1839 until the first World War." There's also a primer, describing early photographic processes.

- The Central Pacific Railroad Photographic History Museum exhibits stereoviews, engravings, maps, and documents illustrating the history of the first transcontinental railroad. Detailed discussion of the photographic processes used to create the images are included. There is also dicussion of the contribution of the Chinese workers who helped build the railroad.
- The Complete History of the Discovery of Cinematography :

- Dizionario English - Italian : This source is a scrollable English to Italian dictionary of photography. The words are listed by the English word, followed by the Italian translation. Users can jump to a specific letter of the alphabet through the appropriate link.
- Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian : Twenty volumes of photogravure images of native North Americans produced by Edward Sheriff Curtis between 1907 and 1930. Accompanied by narrative text.
- The Empire That Was Russia : A Library of Congress exhibition of photographs of architecture, ethnic peoples, transportation, and people at work from the last years of the Russian Empire. Photographs taken by Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii and rendered into color via digichromatography.
- Florida State Archives Photographic Collection : "The Florida Photographic Collection is a nationally recognized component of the Florida State Archives and contains over 790,000 still photographs and approximately 2,000 movies and video tapes. The collection spans a wide range of visual images from copies of mid 15th Century maps to current photographs. In a concentrated effort to make the collection available to the largest possible audience, the Florida State Archives applied for grant funding under the Library Services and Construction Act (LSCA) to digitize a large part of the collection and to make it accessible through the internet. - Handmade Photographic Images : Has articles concerning such topics as infrared and ultraviolet photography, history of pinhole photography, alternative photographic methods and FAQ's. There is also a gallery showing images created using the different methods. There are also links to related sites.
- A History of Photography : "This is not designed to be a course on the history of photography such as a resource to dip into. In addition to pen-portraits of many of the most important photographers of the period, it contains information on some of the most significant processes used during the early days of photography. The project was confined to the first eighty years or so, as this is often a convenient cut-off point in books and when dividing courses into a syllabus. To some extent this has been a frustration, in that there have been many important developments and many interesting photographers who practised during and subsequent to that date. - Introduction to Photography : A collection of six articles written by a professional photographer, originally written for a local photographic course he taught for a technical college years ago. A good site for a beginner interested in learning the basics of photography. The articles include everything from looking at various types of cameras, how they work, the shutter and shutter speed, depth of field, exposure, and lenses.
- Large Format Photography : Discusses the pros and cons of using large format photography, equipment needed, and mistakes to avoid. There are numerous articles on reviews of different types of cameras, accessories, and equipment. There are also links to related sites.
- The Massive Dev Chart : "The world's largest film development chart." Charts of development times for dozens of types of film in sheet, roll, and 35mm.
- Masters of Photography : "This archive of great photography includes biographies, articles, and scanned images that are viewable in three size formats."
- Modern Ruins : This site has beautiful photodocumentaries of modern ruins, mostly around New York. Some use Quicktime panoramas, but most are regular photos. The artist gives brief introductions to his approaches to the different photographed locations.
- The Motion Picture and Television Photo Archive : "This site contains images owned and/or represented by the Motion Picture and Television Photo Archive Inc. (MPTV) - home to over 23,000 classic images dating from the 1910's to the present." You can search for and view images online, but you must obtain the proper rights if you wish to make further use of the images.
- National Anthropological Archives and Human Studies Film Archives : Provides access to historical and contemporary anthropological materials on the world's cultures and the history of anthropology.
- Photo.net : A web site containing Internet resources related to photography. Categories include discussion groups and mailing lists, photo exhibits, equipment reviews, and technique/how to information for traditional and digital photography. There is a search function available.
- PhotoForum on the Internet : "This is the website for the PhotoForum on the Internet, an active mail list dedicated to photography educators, professionals and students. The site includes access to a large database of schools worldwide that teach photography, an extensive FAQ file, exhibition services, employment opportunities, etc."
- Photographic Libraries : The photographic library and archival resource contains national and private photographic collections. The Photographic Library Directory is a unique resource that provides a broad range of visual resources.
- Photography Articles by RIT Faculty Members : "This is an eclectic list including some recent as well as "vintage" articles by several current and past members of the faculty of the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences at RIT. They range from topics on infrared photography, ultraviolet, synchroballistic, panoramic, peripheral, schlieren, photofinish, and many other topics."
- Photography on the Road : Covers the basics of taking good photographs while traveling on the road. It covers what to bring and what not to bring. Includes basic etiquette of taking photographs of native people in the places being visited. There is a bibliography of selected readings and links to related sites.
- Photography@nationalgeographic.com : The photo archive features the work of National Geographic photographers, along with their comments and biographies. The Camera Bag and Q & A sections offer tips for photographers.
- PhotoLinks : A database of Internet resources related to photography. Listings contain annotations written by the site submitter. You can browse by category, region or alphabetically, or search the collection.
- Pinhole Visions : "Pinhole Visions provides organized access to all types of information on pinhole photography, and most especially to the work of pinhole photographers. This site is continually updated as more pinhole enthusiasts add to the pinhole knowledge pool." The site includes galleries of pinhole photography, a directory of pinhole artists on the web, news about pinhole photography developments, and learning resources.

- The Short Courses : This digital photography site provides 'short courses' in "choosing a digital camera", "digital photography", "digital video", "the digital darkroom", "getting better digital photos", and "digital camera resource center".
- Suffering Under a Great Injustice : Ansel Adams's Photographs of Japanese-American Internment at Manzanar : "In 1943, Ansel Adams (1902-1984), America's best-known photographer, documented the Manzanar War Relocation Center in California and the Japanese Americans interned there during World War II. This is a personal home page which describes how to develop your own IR film in both color or black and white formats, saving a person that would like to experiment pictorially time and money. - Art Nut Sculpture Parks and Gardens : This is a sculptor's website that provides a directory of sculpture parks and gardens located all over the world. Contact information is provided for each location.
- Sculptor.org : "A Comprehensive Resource for Sculptors." This website has links to everything about sculptors and for sculptors, both beginning and advanced, as well as resources for research about sculpture.
- Web Gallery of Art : "The Web Gallery of Art is a virtual museum and searchable database of European painting and sculpture of the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods (1150-1750), currently containing over 8,000 reproductions. Biographies, commentaries, guided tours are available."
- Worlds Intertwined: The Etruscan World : Virtual gallery from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. The Etruscans were a great pre-Roman civilization in Italy, and the museum has a very fine collection of Etruscan artifacts.
FOLK ART
- Latvian Folklore and Traditional Culture : "Various materials about Latvian folklore and traditional culture, for example, Latvian folklore groups catalogue which contains descriptions, photos and sound recordings of almost all Latvian folk groups." The site also presents "Information about Latvian traditional musical instruments and Information on folklore activities."
- Quilts and Quiltmaking in America: 1978-1996 : "Showcases materials from two American Folklife Center collections, the Blue Ridge Parkway Folklife Project Collection (1978) and the "All-American Quilt Contest" sponsored by Coming Home, a division of Lands' End, and Good Housekeeping. Together these collections provide a glimpse into America's diverse quilting traditions. The quilt documentation from the Blue Ridge Parkway Folklife Project, an ethnographic field project conducted by the American Folklife Center in cooperation with the National Park Service, includes 229 photographs and 181 recorded interviews with six quiltmakers in Appalachian North Carolina and Virginia. These materials document quilts and quilting within the context of daily life and reflect a range of backgrounds, motivations, and aesthetic sensibilities. The materials presented from the Lands' End All-American Quilt Contest collection include images of approximately 180 winning quilts from across the United States. It represents the work of Harvard faculty, such as Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., Bremer W. Pond, and James Sturgis Pray, as well as that of prominent landscape architects throughout the country. The collection offers views of cities, specific buildings, parks, estates and gardens, including a complete history of Boston's Park System. In addition to photographs, views of locations around the country include plans, maps, and models. Hundreds of private estates from all over the United States are represented in the collection through contemporary views of their houses and gardens (including features such as formal gardens, terraces, and arbors )."

Each case includes a picture, a description of the artwork, of the incident, and the result. The website also provides a bibliogaphy and list of anti-censorship resources.
- Historic House Architecture :A well-written and easy-to-understand guide to American residential architectural styles of the Late-Victorian through Modern periods. Also includes "architectural police" tips on things to avoid when renovating historic houses.
- The Jewish History Resource Center : "The Jewish History Resource Center is a project of the Dinur Center for Research in Jewish History. Over 6000 links to websites in over 30 categories dealing with Jewish History have been visited by our team and have been found to be of value to those interested in Jewish History."
